The Main

For our main, we got the night’s show stopping special. Even the description was quite a mouthful and we had to ask our server to repeat it a few times to get a clear sense of everything that was said!

We had the pleasure of trying the coffee marinated strip loin paired with a fois gras marsala reduction and cranberry sauce along side a crispy potato rosti topped with roasted cauliflower and a side of porcini mushrooms and butternut squash puree.

Like I said, I mouthful to describe and to eat but oh so delicious!

Last up was a special birthday surprise dessert ( even accompanied by show-tune singing waiter!)

Pizza Libretto

IMG_2291

Attention pizza lovers everywhere! I hereby declare Pizza Libretto a must try pizza spot in Toronto. With their three downtown locations, Pizza Libretto aims to be loyal to what real pizza is. They use smart and simple ingredients for all star pizza results.

FullSizeRender (8)

The Vibe

After several attempts at making a reservation at this pizza hotspot and hearing endless buzz from foodies everywhere we were incredibly excited to tryout their Danforth location. They describe the atmosphere as ‘bright, busy, fun, loud and homey’- all very accurate. Their space consists of a bustling upper and lower level consistently packed with people. The central focus of the space is the eye catching open concept kitchen and pizza oven.

The Food

Starting from the range of signature cocktails to their, authentic to their pizzas and amazing service, Pizza Libertto has it all.  These pizza aficionados pride themselves on their authentic Neapolitan pizzas and have even gone as far as to define the characteristics of this classic style pizza and explain how they fit the criteria. Just in case you didn’t think they were serious about their authenticity, Pizza Libretto has been certified to make Verace Pizza Napoletana (“true Neapolitan pizza“)  using the guidelines set out by the Verace Pizza Napoletana Association and as set out by the Italian Government and the European Union.

The Dish

We began our delightful pizza experience with a vibrant and outgoing waiter who took the time to give us his ultimate pizza suggestions and even let us sample of four of their beers before deciding which one we wanted.

For the appetizer we started off with arancini , traditional Italian risotto balls filled with basil pesto, bufala mozzarella, peperonata, tomato and fried for a delicious crunchy exterior

FullSizeRender (5)

Moving onto the main event!

First up was their grilled eggplant pizza

In my eyes, the base of all good pizza is the dough, and boy was this dough every amazing. The thin crust and soft and chewy texture is the perfect platform for the simple toppings. This pizza was topped with crushed tomato, basil, and ricotta salata.

FullSizeRender (9)

Next was their house-made sausage pizza topped with caramelized onion, and mozzarella. You could taste the time and care that was put into the house made sausage and paired with the cheesy mozzarella and the sweetness from the onions, this was pizza perfection.

Barque Smokehouse

photo 1 (35)

Located in Roncesvalles  Village, Barque Smokehouse sets the standard for barbecue in Toronto with their array of succulent meats and side dishes.

The Vibe

This casual spot captures the comfort and feel of a classic southern BBQ joint. With rustic wood tables and brick walls, this small and inviting space has a distinct homey feel.

photo 4 (26)

photo 4 (27)

The Food

Barque indeed takes the title of Smokehouse very seriously, with almost every menu item infused with some type of smoky flavour.

Starting with the smoked spiced popcorn that is placed on every table to snack on before the meal. It’s only down side is being so irresistible that you keep going back for more and get filled up before the meal even starts! So pace yourself with that popcorn because you’ll definitely need to save room for the hefty portion sizes they serve up.

photo 1 (36)

Next up was Barque’s Bourbon Smoked Sour, one of their signature cocktails. This was an interesting combination of freshness, sourness and smokiness.

photo 3 (31)

You know a smokehouse is serious when your place setting comes with its very own basting brush.

photo 2 (31)

After much deliberation and studying of the menu we went with the sampler for two which includes a choice of three meats and three sides… like I said, a lot of food.

photo 4 (28)

For the meats we selected brisket, 2 of their competition chicken thighs and half a rack of their sweat heat baby-back ribs.

photo 2 (32)

What took all of these meats to the next level was that distinctly smoky flavour and heavenly bbq sauces which were brought out to accompany each item. You could slather that stuff on pretty much anything and it would taste good.

And then there were the sides, of which we chose:

A Penne In Review: July 2014

Foodie we made it!

Now that I’ve poorly repurposed a Drake lyric (sorry Drizzy), let’s just talk briefly about this month.

This was our second month of activity as a blog, and for you sci-fi foodies out there, the “Empire Strikes Back” of food blog activity.

If you get that reference, all the love for you.

We started the month a bit late due to our personal and work lives taking over, but still managed to get a lot of content out there.

We’re entering our final month of summer (cries hysterically) which will mean an increased number of barbecue’s, dinner dates and raiding the fridge for Netflix marathons.

But before August begins, here is a look back at our past month of foodie adventuring.

Taste of Toronto

Taste of Toronto is a four day foodie event that takes place at the spacious outdoor location of Fork York.

This event was definitely the height of my foodie festival experience with a plethora of restaurant exhibitors, pop-up food vendors, cooking demonstrations, classes, and top tier chefs.

photo 1 (19)

With so much amazing food to choose from it was difficult to select just a few dishes to try but I narrowed it down to 6, which just happened to be from some of the hottest and buzz-worthy restaurants in Toronto.

Hudson Kitchen

First up was a light and fresh salad that blew my taste buds out of the water.

Hudson Kitchen is a full-service dining restaurant at Dundas and Palmerstone that serves up Progressive American dishes that showcase classic foods kicked up a notch with whimsy and adventure.

photo 3 (18)

photo 4 (16)

The Dish: Zucchini Salad with Buffalo ricotta, mint, and almond

photo 5 (12)

Fresh ribbons of yellow and green zucchini, combined with the rich creamy texture of the buffalo ricotta and the crunch from the almonds made for one of the most well balanced salads I’ve even eaten!

Find out more about Hudson Kitchen and their exciting menu : http://www.hudsonkitchen.com/

Fat Pasha

Next up was Mediterranean hot spot Fat Pasha that showcases Israeli and Sephardic cuisines. Their booth at the festival was lively and friendly with lots of interaction between kitchen and guests.

photo (9)

The Dish: Fat Pasha’s Falafel Pita with cabbage slaw, sour pickles and tahini

photo 2 (19)

Now, I wouldn’t consider myself a Falafel connoisseur but I have tried a fair amount of falafel in my time and this was right up there with with some of the best  authentic Israeli falafel.

The slightly warmed pita was filled with the delicious chickpea balls that were perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and topped with a bright acidic cabbage slaw and creamy tahini sauce.

I knew this was a good dish when others came up to me while I was eating it and asked where I’d gotten it from.

photo 1 (20)

Check them out: http://www.fatpasha.com/

JaBistro

Showcasing carefully crafted modern Japanese cuisine, JaBistro is the younger cousin of the Guu Restaurant family, owned by James HyunSoo Kim.

photo 3 (19)

The Dish: Blowtorched & Pressed Sushi with Shrimp, Mackerel, and Salmon

photo (10)

This tasted pretty much as exciting as it sounds. It took regular old sushi up a level with expertly prepared bites highlighed by  concentrated, pressed  flavours

Find out more at: http://www.jabistro.com/

Barque Smokehouse

Labeled as some of the best barbeque in Toronto, Barque is definitely a must try on my list of restaurants to visit. This was the station with the longest lineup by far but for good reasoning.

photo 1 (21)photo 2 (20)

The Dish: Barque Rack O’ Bama: Baby Back Ribs (rubbed, smoked, and basted). Served with a potato, corn, and candied smoked bacon salad.

photo 4 (17)

I got a glimpse into their expert smoke work and BBQ flavouring with the  these delicious ribs. I could taste the time and effort that was put into the smoking and basting process which resulted in a falloff the bone flavour bursting bite.

Visit their Roncesvalles location: barque.ca/

Bymark

Part of Mark McEwan’s group of popular  restaurants, Bymark  is a fine dining spot located in the Toronto financial district.

photo 4 (18)photo 5 (13)

At Taste of TO they were serving up rich and succulent lobster poutine.

photo 1 (22)

Chunks of butter braised lobster  served with perfectly crispy fries and a classic bearnaise sauce.. what could be bad?!

Richmond Station

This is a Toronto gem which I`ve had the chance to try ( new post to come soon on that!). They have a contemporary menu that exemplifies seasonal, well thought out dishes with bold, harmonic flavours.

The Dish: Station Ice Cream Sundae

photo 3 (20)

A delicious sweat treat to end off an amazing foodie festival!

Taste of Toronto was an expertly run event with a jam packed schedule and list of activities that exposed guests to a wide range of foodie adventures. Can`t wait for next years event!

Dr. Laffa

This summer has brought on a new trend of Mediterranean restaurants popping up across the city. From Byblos, to S.Lefkowitz, to Rose City Kitchen to Fat Pasha hummus is on the rise across Toronto. Dr. Laffa stands out from the sea of Mediterranean spots with its location in the north end of the city serving up authentic and expertly crafted Middle Eastern classics.

The Vibe:

Dr. Laffa’s location at Dufferin and Steeles is nestled in an unlikely area of industrial businesses and has a quaint small seating area with a fun family atmosphere.

The Food:

The home-run, touch-down, goal scoring item of this spot is their ‘laffa’s’ – a traditional, thin, pita style flat bread.  This light, fluffy chewy style bread is perfect for dipping in some of their signature style hummus’, or stuffing with kebab’s or shwarma.

The Dish:

Buca Restaurant

Buca Restaurant has topped many of  Toronto’s ‘Best Lists’ for years, even being acknowledged by some of the highest influencers in the culinary world, like Jamie Oliver, who during his visit to the restaurant in 2011 called it his ‘favourite meal of the year’.

With all the buzz surrounding Buca, I felt that it was a hot spot which I need to check off my foodie bucket list and it most definitely did not disappoint.

The meal, and experience as a whole quite frankly blew me away. Despite the restaurant’s high accreditation, its location is quite inconspicuous, nestled in an alleyway off King St.

Once I reached the actual restaurant space I felt like I had been transported out from the busy streets of downtown Toronto to a serene street in Italy where I proceeded to enjoy ( big statement coming up here)… one of my favourite meals of all time.

photo 5 (6)

The experience began with a deeply thorough explanation from our waiters ( yes, we indeed had two waiters taking care of us) about each aspect of the authentically Italian menu. They elaborated on their recommendations and the reasoning and processes behind several dishes on the menu.

photo 4 (9)

Several questions later, we finally selected our choices for the night.

Drinks

I started off with one of their signature cocktails, which combined flavours of blackberry, lavender and clove. Refreshing an delicious on a hot summer night.

photo 4 (10)

Appetizers

Moving onto appetizers we selected the  Prosciutto di Bisonte – hand-cut leg of bison, aged for 31 months (in their in-house curing room… yup that’s right they cure their own meats. Can’t really get more authentic than that!)

photo 3 (8)

And for our ‘Fromaggio’ , the Taleggio, a cow’s milk cheese with a semi-soft texture that had a mild sharpness.

We also got the ‘Nodini’, which were warm bread knots with olive oil, rosemary and salt. As an obsessive bread lover, these were little bites of bread heaven.

photo 2 (11)

Mains

Gnocchi All’Astice

This was no standard potato filled dumpling. The fresh cut pasta had a hand-rolled saffron, fava and ricotta filling and was topped with fermented butter, green almonds, and the star of the dish, fresh Nova Scotia lobster.

photo 1 (11)

Needless to say, this dish was pretty much life changing.

Pizze Verdure

Miles away from my go to versions of pizza, this ‘Bianca’, or white, pizza was topped with grilled green asparagus, seasonal, mushrooms, pecorino brillo, and whipped goat cheese.

photo 3 (9)

These seemingly simple ingredients combined to create  a distinctly intricate and mouth watering bite… Pizza will never be the same for me after this experience.

Toronto Wine and Spirit Festival

Combining an afternoon of delicious food and drinks, spectacular weather, a great view and some live music made for an awesome time at this weekend’s Toronto Wine and Spirit Festival.

Hosted at Sugar Beach just steps away from Toronto’s waterfront, this weekend-long festival was a great way to kick off the official start of summer.

Our food-centric tendencies drew us to some pretty sweet eats.

First up is our barbecue lover,  Arielle!

Del Fico Catering

A vendor that first caught my attention was Del Fico who was serving up some mouth watering BBQ classics. Del Fico is a full service catering and events company that specializes in everything from hors d’oeuvres to corporate catering to BBQ and much more!

The Dish: Barbecued Beef Ribs with Molasses-Bourbon Sauce

IMG_2527

These ribs were the perfect combination of sweet, spicy and tangy with a fall off the bone texture  that made them quite irresistible. Definitely the messiest of the food we ate but 100% worth it! Not to mention the boisterous and entertaining staff who were working at the booth that drew in crowds from a mile away.

Check them out.

The Saucy  Pierogi

IMG_2600

We just can’t get enough of these guys! This inventive pierogi pop up vendor never ceases to amaze us with their unique twists on this classic food item.

At this event we tried their Jerk Chicken  pierogi.

IMG_2605

Yes that’s right, Jerk Chicken and  Pierogi were just used in the same sentence. A seemingly unlikely combination but one that definitely worked. The spicy filling, tangy jerk sauce and crisp apple cabbage slaw hit all the right notes.

Find out what event they’ll be at next.

Mill Street Brewery

This micro-brewery has been cranking out craft beer in East Toronto’s historic Distillery District.

The Drink: Lemon tea Beer.

IMG_2535

This refreshing belgian style beer is made with a unique blend of wheat, corriander, orange peel and a special yeast that gives it complexity and depth of fruity flavour.

Visit their location in Toronto and find out for yourself!

1800 Tequila

1800 tequila is an original super-premium tequila, renowned for being expertly aged and consistently smooth

The Drink: Gold Mango

IMG_2593

Smooth sweet gold tequila mixed with fresh mango and lemon juice made for a refreshing cocktail.

Now, it’s time for our resident food inhaler, Robin!

First of all, can we all just point out how beautiful this weekend was?

The great city of Toronto was alive with people and events, and of course, the smell of food and drinks in the air.

Speaking of food and drinks, lets kick off my first pick of the weekend!

Our Lobster Shack

For me personally, nothing says summer more than some really good seafood.

No wonder that Our Lobster Shack was the first place to catch my attention, and the resulting growls of my stomach.

Featuring a variety of menu item’s including the Lobster poutine which I now gravely regret not getting for the road home, I decided to try out their signature dish, the Lobster roll.

The Dish: Lobster Roll

IMG_2566

To answer a question you’re probably thinking by looking at this picture: yes, it does taste as good as it looks.

Not only did the sandwich look fresh and full of colours, the taste of the lobster itself was so fresh and as Arielle pointed out, the bread was so good you could taste the butter.

It was literally a premium lobster meal in the form of a sandwich, and as we all know, sandwiches are the corner stones of humanity.

Well, probably not but this sandwich was damn good either way.

Portobello Burger

IMG_2621

Here’s a fun fact: I REALLY like meat.

When I first laid my eyes upon the portobello food truck, I was hesitant at their vegetarian choices because, well, see the sentence above.

For our readers however I thought it would be nice to add a vegetarian meal, so I decided to go with their signature portobello burger.

To all our vegetarian readers out there, thank you, because this was one of the best burgers I’ve had in my life.

And I’ve eaten a lot of burgers in my 22 years of existence.

The Dish: Portobello Burger

IMG_2628

Never could I have imagined preferring a portobello mushroom slice over a beef burger patty, but it happened.

This fresh tasting burger came with your usual burger fixings, with the addition of the portobello mushroom slice, melted goat cheese and a spicy chipotle mayo sauce.

The best part of this burger has to be the fact there was no “burger fallout”, which is basically that feeling of dread after having something that rich.

Fresh, healthy and relatively light, this is the perfect burger of the summer if you’re looking to eat light.

Find out more about their healthy eats !

Monetto Il Prosecco, via the iYellow Wine Club

IMG_2537

Recently this summer, literally a month ago, i spent two weeks in France especially in the south where I learned about wine.

I wouldn’t call myself a wine snob or one of those people who spit out wine after tasting it, but I would say I’ve picked up a few tricks here and there.

The Drink: Enter the Mionetto Il Prosecco, a medium intensity citrus with hints of melons and pear with a refreshing taste. This is something that would have gone perfectly with a nice seared salmon or a avocado salad.

I suppose I’m not much of a drinker, but I do love my wine and this was a great refreshing wine for summer days like this weekend.

Find out more about this wine and others at iYellow!

Brugal Anejo

IMG_2630

The Dominican Republic based rum manufacture also made an appearance, handing out a refreshing rum, strawberry blend drink that was a bit strong, but I did not mind one bit.

It wasn’t my favourite drink of the day (my favourite being Arielle’s Gold Mango drink which I got a sip of), but the refreshing blend of the strawberry helped balance the strong taste of the rum.

IMG_2634

If this weekend was not the perfect example of what the summer is supposed to be, please go to our contact page or tweet us to let us know what your idea of the perfect summer day is.

The Toronto Wine and Spirit festival was the best way to officially kick off the summer, and we really cannot wait to see what this city has in store for us for the rest of the summer.

BONUS ROUND, Here’s a ton of pictures from the event itself.

Dishing With DeMontis Launch Party

IMG_6795

A week or so ago, a friend came to me wondering if I was available to film a launch party to promote a new show.

As you get to know me over the next few months (and years hopefully), you will eventually figure out that I am a big videographer nut who just jumps at the chance to do anything related to film.

It also helps that this event was for the launch of a new show on Sirius XM radio, dedicated to foodies and newcomers everywhere.

“Dishing with DeMontis” is a new show that launched earlier in the year, but the weather this week was perfect enough to finally hold a proper launch party for it.

The host of the show, Rita DeMontis, is an award-winning writer who is a part of the Toronto SUN team as its resident food and lifestyle editor.

She is also the food editor as well as the National Food editor for Sun Media.

Marrying her love for journalism and food, each week her show brings listeners a mix of entertainment and food trends that will make your stomach grumble violently.

The beautifully crafted event was held at the modern and stylish 25 Liberty Restaurant located in Liberty village.

Sporting high-ceilings and 10ft windows, this venue was the perfect mixture of elegance and space to host such a party.

But really, what is the best part of any restaurant? The food! And you can take my stomachs word on this, the food was excellent.

IMG_2340

Chef Daniel and his staff crafted a beautifully presented and delicious menu with a diverse range of hors d’oeuvers, my personal favourite being the mini cheesecake bites.

I miss you, mini cheesecake bites.

Not only was the launch party a great success for a new show by a celebrated and successful foodie, the venue was the absolute perfect choice for such a launch.

A big thank you to both Rita DeMontis and the team behind “Dishing with DeMontis”, as well as 25 Liberty and Edana Integrated for having us there.

For more on DeMontis’s new show, check her out! – Dishing With DeMontis
